Nursing care at home: RNs and RPNs
How our nurses can help
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Medication administration and management
- Care after surgery or a hospital stay
- Support with long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart failure and COPD
- Catheter, ostomy and feeding tube care
- Palliative and end-of-life comfort care
- Health checks and vital signs, with updates for family and the doctor
- Nursing support at the bedside in hospital (private duty)
What a nurse can do depends on the care plan and, for some tasks, the doctor’s orders. We will talk it through with you before care starts.
Nurse or PSW?
A nurse (RN or RPN) handles clinical care such as wounds, medications and health monitoring. A PSW helps with daily living: bathing, dressing, meals, moving safely and companionship.
Many families use both, for example a nurse visit for a dressing change and a PSW for daily routines. Not sure what you need? Call us and we will help you decide.
How it works
- Call or send a message. Tell us who needs care, where, and when.
- We plan the care together. We learn the person’s routine, health needs and preferences, and agree on a schedule.
- We match the right Care Pro by skills, availability and, where we can, language.
- Care starts. Each visit is checked in and timed in the Bamwan app, and you confirm the hours.
Our nurses
- PSWs, RPNs and RNs who are screened, including police and vulnerable sector checks
- Nurses registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Staff who are bonded, insured and covered by WSIB
- A local office in Alliston and a phone line answered 24/7
Common questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral for private nursing?
No referral is needed to book private nursing. For some tasks, such as giving medications or treating a wound, we may ask for the care plan or the doctor’s orders.
Is home nursing covered by OHIP?
Ontario Health atHome (310-2222) arranges publicly funded nursing for people who qualify. Families often book private nursing when they need more visits, more time, or faster help. Some private insurance plans and Veterans Affairs Canada programs may also help with costs.
Can a nurse come every day?
Yes. Visits can be daily, a few times a week, or longer shifts, depending on the care plan.
Do you provide palliative care at home?
Our nurses and PSWs can support comfort care at home alongside your family doctor or palliative team. Call us to talk about what your family needs.
